Afternoon Tea. There is something nice and civilised about this ritual. You and your friends are seated and marvelling at a beautiful tiered stand filled with smart looking canapés and dainty sweet pastries. The aroma of freshly brewed tea permeates the air and everyone is enjoying the light chatter and laughter before the first bite. What follows is the not so silent agreement on how delicious everything is. How did this wonderful ritual came about? No one is quite sure how we came to enjoy afternoon teas. One thing for sure, we inherited this lovely ritual from the British.
It is said that the Duchess of Bedford, who suffered hunger pangs from the long stretch between lunch and dinner, decided to remedy it with a tray of tea, bread, butter and sweet cakes. Once this delightful meal is shared with friends, it progressed into the wonderful social event we know today as afternoon tea.
